ABOUT
Roys Peak Radio Users is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit group dedicated to ensuring safety and connectivity of radio users in Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea areas.
For over 50 years, we’ve provided reliable radio communications including a vital VHF radio service through Channel 66 (Wānaka) and Channel 4 (Hawea), a vital service trusted by local operators, recreational boaters, emergency services, and community members.
Our roots go back even further. The Upper Clutha Radio Telephone Users Association was formed in the late 1970s when a small group inherited a radio repeater unit on Mt. Roy.
Initially serving just a few operators, the system has grown to support commercial and recreational marine users, plus other users such as the Department of Conservation (DOC), Civil Defence, Search and Rescue, and many others.
WHAT WE DO
Out on the water, where cellphone coverage is often unreliable or nonexistent, Roys Peak Radio Users provides a critical lifeline through Channel 66 (Wānaka) and Channel 4 (Hāwea). With one call, your message is broadcast to all channel users, ensuring help can be mobilised quickly. Whether you’re experiencing an engine failure, worsening weather, or a life-threatening emergency, Channel 66 connects you to a wide network of listeners who can respond immediately.
Our system is trusted and used by:
- Local lake operators
- Recreational and commercial marine users
- Civil Defence
- Search and Rescue teams
- Coastguard
- The Department of Conservation (DOC)
- Private companies
